Teien Art Museum Part Two: Inside
And now for the interior of the palace. Can you see why I come here a lot? It's an absolutely wonderful muddle of art deco design. As it goes, Prince Asuka Yasuhiko took a little trip to Paris in the 1920's with his squeeze, fell in love with all the deco architecture, came back to Japan and ordered a "similar style" of building be created as his royal residence in the 30's. The most wonderful space in the palace is surely the chequerboard-floored atrium, with its dagger-shaped pendant lamps and vast views across the park. I also love the myriad lighting techniques; no two rooms have the same type of illumination.Apologies for the image quality, they're scanned straight from the museum's publication which you can pick up if you're in there for an exhibiton.
