I've always adored Nathalie Du Pasquier's print designs since I was first introduced to the Memphis movement of the 80's, of which she was a founding designer. The simple, bold and slightly odd geometric combinations, perfect colour schemes and timeless nature of the prints (well, for me anyway) just win in every way. I would even go so far as to say she's my favourite print designer. Here's a selection of my favourite patterns.

My Tokyo App for iPad

Another hiatus! Even though I don't like being too busy to blog, these little absences are always warranted. In this case, I've just released an iPad app.

You may remember (some of you may have even purchased) this little zine I created back in 2009? Well, it has metamorphosed into something far bigger than I ever imagined. Together with Omnomnom Studios, we've been silently slogging away on a comprehensive iPad version of My Tokyo for the last year; me living in Tokyo taking photos and authoring the content, and Omnomnom in Sydney designing and developing the program itself.

It's great to finally see it online and downloadable, and we've already received some wonderful press from Tokyo Weekender and Tokyo Indie, with the reviews slowly trickling in.

The app is a constantly evolving project for us, and we're hoping to get an iPhone version done pretty soon, along with a bunch more exciting features. But for now, if you have an iPad, you can go and grab it!

My heart skipped a beat when I came across this fantastic archive of retro issues of Vogue dating from the 60's and 70's. My favourite from this era is always going to be the more glamorous Vogue Italia, but you can find a few UK and Paris issues thrown in there for good measure. I'm quite inspired to post about French Vogue too, it was similarly directional and amazing for its time.

I love everything about these spreads; the hair, styling, makeup, locations and simplicity. Not to mention the incredible clothing. I'm quite over magazines stuffed full of hundreds of different layouts, each page appearing like a deranged collage. These back issues are really something to aspire to.

Ikko Tanaka

Another genius of Japanese poster design. Ikko Tanaka established his own studio in Tokyo in 1963, and is credited with developing Muji's identity, where he worked as art director until 2001. You wouldn't believe how much this guy has been ripped-off over the years by other "poster designers". This is the real deal; clean, effortless design created with a true illustrator's hand.

Sloth-like Behaviour

As the *second most enjoyable of the seven deadly sins, and also one of my favourite jungle creatures, "Sloth" makes for pretty good concept behind After The Apple's latest collection. These covetable carriers are the work of ex Mimco designer Rachelle Dendle, who draws strong influences from her travels abroad into her collections. Combine that with impeccable design details and an appreciation of beautiful-quality materials, and you have collection after collection of to-die-for bags.

I really can't stop watching that sloth video though. It's so goddamn cute.

Martin Nicolausson: The Doors

What an intriguing and beautiful project this is by Martin Nicolausson. The illustrations are mysterious on their own, but together with the video it evokes something perfectly surreal. My favourite has got to be the door with the letter box.

Kamakura Walks

Sorry about the big break everyone. My time in Tokyo came to an end a couple of weeks ago.

It was pretty difficult to say goodbye, but I have a ridiculous amount of great memories, new friends, creative collaborations and general Japan Life Experience™ to take away from my year abroad. I'm giving myself around four months before I'm back for a winter visit.

One of the little trips I took during my last whirlwind weekend involved jumping on a train and heading down to Kamakura. The place is well-known for its giant Buddha, tranquil bamboo forest and popular beaches, but we decided to skip those and go for a bush walk. Getting off the train at Kita-Kamakura station, we hopped on the temple trail which meanders through the forest to eventually end at south Kamakura. In our sleepy, hungover state we were perhaps not entirely prepared for an actual hiking trail, but in the end it was worth it as we were taken through one of the most beautiful areas of the Shonan coast.

In the photos you can see Kaizo-ji Temple and Zeniarai Benten. At Kaizo-ji you can smash small clay plates on a rock to let go of whatever's bothering you, and at Zeniarai Benten you can wash all your cash and it will in fact "multiply" (results may vary). Quite a useful couple of temples.

After getting out of the scrub we took the peaceful backstreets down to Yuigahama Beach. Along the way we stopped at a cafe which appeared out of nowhere, right when we felt like coffee and scones. We finished up with cold drinks at one of the many pop-up summer beach bars at Yuigahama, and we all decided that we could "retire" at Kamakura.

Juillet Division

Alright, so I said I was going to report on a top-notch shop every month, but you may have noticed I skipped July right after I said that. It's all about the (in) consistency, people. In actual fact, I spent July (and June, and May, and April...) running around to all of Tokyo's best fashion and design spots, chatting with the store owners and snapping pictures for this little project I have in the works. We're still keeping things under wraps for now but prepare yourselves, because My Tokyo is about to explode onto your iPads with all the force of a thousand maxed-out credit cards. So keep your eyes and ears open...you follow me?

But, I digress. Juillet Division in Nakameguro is possibly my favourite store in Tokyo. Not because it has an over-designed, eye-popping interior, or covers eight floors, or has stock that appears on every page of Nylon Japan. Juillet just has beautiful, affordable clothing. Most of the labels are relatively unknown up-and-comers hailing from Europe, Japan and the US, but you can find pieces on their racks from some well-known names like Clu, Sophomore and Humanoid. Their collection is thoughtfully selected each season and the buyers have a strong aesthetic which, unfortunately for my wallet, is my style in a nutshell.

Eric Hurtgen

I like to call it the "Designer's Triangle".

It has been so utterly overused that I feel it's now a real cop-out for artists and designers; much like the ubiquitous white Didot type contained in a black circle (yawn). I found Eric Hurtgen's work a while back but only just remembered to post it up here. His combination of low-fi black and white photography and teeny tiny triangles is far more sensitive and restrained than similar graphic work I've seen (though they do remind me a bit of the Qantas logo). And who knew animated gifs could actually be artistic. Thank you, Eric Hurtgen.

Toga A/W 2012

"Entwine, Bind, Knot" is the appropriate title of this stunning collection by Toga. Inspired by the Greek meaning "draped clothes", creator Yasuko Furuta has been experimenting with the movement and fluidity of her fabrics since founding the label in '97. And the results certainly speak for themselves. Sensitive, off-beat colour palettes, lush fabrics, eye-catching embellishment and very inventive yet wearable shapes. When in doubt, drape!

Baby Love

Occasionally I fall head-over-heels in love with a fashion shoot. This is one of those times.

"Baby Love" by Josh Olins for V Magazine.

Everything about this shoot is beautiful. The styling, the compositions, the hair and makeup, the colours....the whole lot. Not to mention the amazing outfits (put together with the expert eye of Jay Massacret), featuring a bunch of pieces by Diane von Furstenberg, Viktor & Rolf, Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta.

Imagine if girl groups actually looked this amazing? Take a hint, AKB48.

Sebastien Verdon

Swiss artist Sebastien Verdon's work is a fascinating take on space, structural matter and what fills "the void". Filling the void of space on my desk is a similar collection of bills and delivery notices as you can see in the above Archiv Aufgearbeitet (Refurbished Archive), though of course I haven't managed to arrange mine so artistically. Or pay them.

Niijima / 新島

I've been out of the loop. I've been in tropical paradise. If you ever get the chance to go to Niijima, there are no excuses. See below.

For the time being, my whole body aches, I'm peeling off sheets of burnt skin and nursing great welted mozzie bites, I need about a week's worth of sleep and I can't seem to remove that "rock the boat" sensation from my brain. But I'm already planning my next trip.

Niijima is about 8 hours ferry ride from Tokyo (2 if you take the high-speed jet. But that leaves a little less time for boozing on the deck, doesn't it?). You arrive, pitch a tent, hire a bicycle and ride around to your heart's content. The island is generally pretty easy access, and the beaches varied and spectacular. The east side backs onto the hills and is home to sheer cliffs and huge surfing swells, while the west side is a little more calm and user-friendly. There is also a fantastic free (!) onsen on this side which has been styled to look rather unusually like a miniature Greek Acropolis, and from here you have a perfect sunset vantage point.

It is impossible to find any fault with Niijima...apart from the fact that it is occasionally in the direct line of a typhoon path. But you know.

Each month I'm going to feature one or two exceptional new (or old) stores, share some of my favourite bits & pieces from their catalogue and generally speak pretty well of them.

This month I'm giving a shout-out to Howkapow and Playmountain. How can you not be intrigued by those names may I ask?

I discovered Howkapow only a couple of days ago. It's a new, UK-based online store that promotes independent designers, and the delightful owner Cat How was kind enough to email me a little "Hello, here we are!". And I'm glad she did, because you couldn't get a product range any closer to my taste than if I hand-picked everything myself. I also like the onomatopoeic potential of "Howkapow".

And speaking of (good) taste, Playmountain. This serene little store on the better side of Harajuku carries a whole lot of cool and very covetable products for the home. I was in there the other day chatting with the lovely staff and ogling some antique archery arrows they'd imported from New York. Sadly I left without the set of arrows and all the other crap I wanted, but I'd say I'll be back after my next pay cheque.

Cut and Form

A couple of weekends ago I dropped into one of my favourite Tokyo galleries SCAI the Bathhouse to finally check out the fascinating works of Noriko Ambe. I left the gallery just as baffled as to how she achieves her effects as when I first came across her work.

Simply put, Ambe's art is paper-cutting genius. Inspired by topographic patterns, the power of positive/negative space and natural forms, she painstakingly hand-cuts through every sheet of paper that makes up her detailed sculptures. Much of her work is an investigation of human relationships and time. I'd say it's more of an investigation into RSI, but the end product is truly worth it.

The Bike-Friendly Girl's Fashion Guide

I've been talking about doing this for a while now. Not long ago I bought a brand new little white bike to zip around the burbs of Tokyo on, and it has been serving its purpose very well indeed. When spring (finally) started I got inspired to create a few style ideas for girls who bike...and here is the result!

Notably this is coming in a tad later than I would have liked. Spring is nearly over here and it has just started pissing down with rain, marking what I think is the start of the rainy season, which = shite biking weather. I've also been extremely busy turning this sucker into an iPad app, but! Excuses, excuses. Summer is an ok time for riding too, just wear sunblock and drink lots of water. And if you're in the southern hemisphere, well...just put this into effect in a few months time.

I've tried to keep the looks easy-wear and practical (hence loads of Top Shop & AA), because let's face it, you have a saddle between your crotch. A few of the items featured I actually own, use and haven't (yet) destroyed whilst riding my bike. Look for the "Nice!" bubble.

Turkey via Tokyo

Bessho Onsen

Get out of Tokyo and get to Bessho Onsen (別所温泉). This beautiful little village in Nagano-ken is only a couple of hours away by Shinkansen and fulfils the list of perfect weekend away requirements. Forest, serenity, historical sights, bush trails, cute village streets and the nicest people I've ever met. I had one lovely grandma walk me, my mother and my aunt from the station, straight up a hill to the supermarket just because we mentioned we were looking for a snack. She even went so far as to get mildly angry at the shop clerk when she said they were out of onigiri. The exceptional supermarket sashimi made up for it though. She did also happen to recommend her own ryokan upon our departure, but hey. Why not?

And one more thing - onsen, onsen, onsen. It aint called Bessho Onsen for nothing. We did a considerable amount of soaking, and I'm sure I returned to Tokyo reeking of sulphur on Monday. I've got the onsen bug again, and will continue submerging myself in various pools of water until summer arrives and it's just far too hot for that kind of thing.

Anrealage

Anrealage = unrealage. This is fashion vs sculpture at its best. Designer Kunihiko Morinaga started the label in 2003, the name being a combination of the words real, unreal and age (but you already guessed that, right?)

Here are some bits and pieces from their 2009 S/S collection, aptly named “○△□”. Morinaga was exploring the concept of turning symbols into clothing and vice versa. The items made for a pretty nice looking installation.

100% Spring

I gave myself three full days. I started with Shinjuku Gyoen on Wednesday, moved on to Nakameguro Canal with my dear mum and aunt on Friday and finally got to the epicentre of drunken springtime revelry on Sunday at Yoyogi Park. I had organised a 1920's picnic, as you do. By the last day of my intensive flower-viewing excursion (and with a short trip to Nagano just around the corner), I'll admit I needed a break from shoving my camera in people's faces. So please excuse the lack of pink flowery photos. Luckily, I have friends who took a couple of wonderful videos I can now share with you.

Oh, Hanami!

Yes, everyone has flower-viewing fever here in Tokyo. I joined the hoards of camera-happy locals on a stroll around Shinjuku Gyoen (新宿御苑) a couple of days ago, and here be the result.

Half in the shade, half in the sun. I'd say this is an ideal choice.

Hate to admit it, but I too have Hanami fever. I guess you just have to be here! The temperature is perfect, the parks are open for business and anything pink and fluffy just makes your day that little bit better. Though unlike several enthusiastic individuals and groups, I didn't feel the need to dress in something pink and/or fluffy to mark the occasion. Lawdy.

But! This is just the beginning. The Hanami season is a late-comer this year, and should hopefully continue for a couple of weeks longer. Heading back to Yoyogi Koen (代々木公園) this weekend for a giant picnic of the 1920's variety, so expect another slew of petal-happy photographs soon. Apologies in advance.

The world of letterpress printing is not one that I can say I've really delved into. My printing expertise is more in fabric than in paper, and any other knowledge I have stretches to RGB, CMYK and "oh shit, I need to get this printed by 3pm". I vaguely know how to identify a design that's been letterpress printed because there's a certain tactile quality to the end product, but I knew it was a far more detailed and technical process so I investigated a little further.

Recently there has been a revival of letterpress printing that has seen odd studios and hobby shops open up in cities around the world. At Central Saint Martins College, for instance, they are now running short courses in the technique. The movement (much like the return of Gocco) has been sparked purely by a love of the handmade; and if there's one city that knows how to do handmade, it's Tokyo.

I'd heard of a letterpress studio in Ookayama, just near my Japanese school in Jiyugaoka. Apparently it was almost brand new, run by young designers *and* they also provide workshops so you can gain a bit of insider knowledge. Great! What I found when I got there was the beautiful little print studio of PLY.

Ply occupy this bright little studio space, where they design and print fine handmade books, artist's works and other ephemera.

Two printing machines. At the top is an automatic feed platen, which inks the design automatically, much in the same way as a rotary screenprinter. Below is a simple tabletop platen in the Ply studio where yep, you guessed it - you do it all by hand.

Examples of finished products, Ply flyer and greeting cards. And don't they look great? The flyer has been press-printed (blue) with the white areas then screen-printed over the top later.

Like I said, one of the best parts of visiting this studio was discovering that they run various workshops and activities, including "Letterpress For Beginners" - hello! Hopefully my inability to follow complex instructions in Japanese won't set me back too much, because I'll definitely be going back to get my print on soon. Overall, there has been an enormous response to the disaster, especially through online resources such as Twitter. For once I'm actually thankful for the speed of social networking. It allowed accurate news reports and support networks to spread, which is necessary after such a devastating event.

Looking on the brighter side of things though, Spring is finally here in Tokyo, the mood is lightening up a bit and people are getting back to their daily routines. We all know how much work is going on in the affected areas but can rest assured that we've helped in any way we can, and know now that more supplies are getting through.

So on that note: Expect some new and exciting blog posts to come! I'm pretty energised to be back in Tokyo, with lots and lots to share on C&T.

Donate to Japan: The Postcard Series

As you all know, Japan has suffered immense heartache and loss over the last week with Friday's powerful 9.0 magnitude earthquake just off the coast of Sendai in Tōhoku, and the devastating tsunami waves which followed. The affected areas were completely unprepared for these events, and as a consequence thousands of people have been confirmed dead or missing, and more than 500,000 displaced with no home or even town to return to.

It has been a week of sadness and anxiety, with these numbers constantly rising and dangerous, freezing conditions hampering rescue attempts. Those who managed to survive are also becoming affected by lack of supplies, electricity and transport.

I arrived back in Sydney from Tokyo on Tuesday. The whole way home I was worrying about Japan and trying to think of some way I could assist. As a graphic designer you're probably not the most useful person around. I was, however, halfway through a little project that seemed to fit the bill.

How you can help:

The collection of designs below reflect what I love about Japan, and I am now selling them as a set of six postcards for $8.00, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Japan Red Cross Society. The postcards are printed on standard weight matte stock, making them nice and easy to post all over the place. Help spread the Japan love, help the country get back on its feet and just do something nice.

Teien Art Museum Part Three: Typography

And now we come to the final part in my little Teien mini-series. Possibly the best, or at least until the next exhibition opens. Typographic Posters of the 20th Century is currently on at the museum, and if you get the chance to go please do. I've been to a few typography exhibitions in a few different cities, and haven't seen a collection this broad in the one place before.

The works displayed cover every decade from - yes, you guessed it - 1900 to 2000. Each era is accompanied by insightful info (日本語 + English) that describes how the social and political climates of the period affected the design of its typography. All of my favourites were from Germany and Switzerland, but the variety on display is incredible. Below are a few that really caught my eye.

That last one's a killer. Now I want to go and create my own type.

Teien Art Museum Part Two: Inside

And now for the interior of the palace. Can you see why I come here a lot? It's an absolutely wonderful muddle of art deco design. As it goes, Prince Asuka Yasuhiko took a little trip to Paris in the 1920's with his squeeze, fell in love with all the deco architecture, came back to Japan and ordered a "similar style" of building be created as his royal residence in the 30's. The most wonderful space in the palace is surely the chequerboard-floored atrium, with its dagger-shaped pendant lamps and vast views across the park. Teien Art Museum Part One: Outside

I recently dropped by one of my favourite places in Tokyo to faff away a few hours, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. I generally find myself there a lot as the museum, a converted royal residence built in the 1930's, is a fascinating art deco building which holds even more fascinating art exhibitions. The surrounding gardens are also a beautiful respite from the pace of Tokyo, just outside the walls.

I've called this part one as I'm going to include a part two and three, and ta for your interest. I'll post up some photos of the wonderfully bourgeoisie interior for part two, and part three will be all about the current exhibition, Typographic Posters of the 20th Century, in which I died and went to designer heaven.

I discovered DJ Codomo (Tetsuaki Shigeoka) whilst trying to find a gig to go to this weekend, and instantly fell in love with his joyful, synthy beeps and beats. And his music videos are really just wonderful. Thank you, internet.

Did I mention his fantastic old-school website? I'm seeing more of these "drag the dialogue boxes around", bitmap-style sites lately, and I just love them. Perhaps that's because I was more or less weaned on computing systems that looked like this.

For the interest of Tokyo inhabitants, he's playing on Friday at Three in my little neighbourhood, Shimokitazawa.

How to be a Tourist in Your Hometown

Tapetelana

Let's combine four things I love; Shimokitazawa, Mexican handicrafts, carpet weaving and geometry. The outcome of this is Tapetelana, the designs of Tokyo-based textile weaver Yumiko Murai. I randomly discovered her exhibition at a tiny gallery space in my suburb, had a good gush over her work in my woeful Japanese, and I suppose we connected in a way that only fabric-lovers do.

Pinky Violence

"Pinky Violence" is the name given to a genré of films made in late 60's / early 70's Japan that depicted sexed-up, vengeful, sadistic and often nude bad girls. All the elements of a perfect film, right?

I discovered the films after hearing some of the music, which is about as ridiculous and amazing as the movies are themselves. Introducing Reiko Ike; actress, singer and entertainer, who was eventually arrested (twice) in the 70's for possession of drugs and illegal gambling. Living the dream, right? Needless to say she dropped out of the entertainment industry after that.

And one of my favourites, the theme from "Play Girl".

There are a huge array of titles you could choose from for a first encounter, but many dub Sex & Violence as being one of the greats. I personally love the Delinquent Girl Boss series and of course, Play Girl, but if you want a full list check out this excellent resource on The Deuce grindhouse cinema database.

And not to forget the amazing posters from the era too. Desperately trying to find one for my own collection.

Typograffit

Up for a bit of time-wasting? Do you like typography? Then read further if you wish to faff off the next couple of hours with Typograffit.

I walked past Theory in Aoyama the other day and I noticed, to my joy, a typographic cushion display.

And then again with this VM in Shibuya...

Typography! Miniature cushions! I did a little happy designer dance before getting online and checking out exactly what Typograffit was. Lo and behold, it's an app that you can stick on your iPhone, iPad or just use the old-fashioned way (in your browser).

You stick in any words and phrases you want, then Typograffit generates a brand new version in colourful, ransom note style text. Here's something I came up with.

Well I do! Okay? Try it and see what you come up with. I've been here for at least 45 minutes now trying to happen upon my own perfect combination of neon letters. Just a few more minutes....

This Must Be The Place

If you had plenty of time and felt like braving the listening wind (two Talking Heads puns in the first sentence. I'm on fire), you may have dropped by Vacant in Harajuku to see David Byrne's art exhibition.

So you probably know Byrne as the charismatic, peculiar-dance-moving, difficult to explain frontman of Talking Heads. I believe the first time I saw him on TV he looked like this:

This strange man in an oversized suit became an instant favourite, and whenever his awkward, intense gestures graced the screen I would do my best to imitate them with utmost accuracy. Of course I didn't really get the music as a kid, but at least it had a good beat and it was better than dancing to the theme from Degrassi. I got the music later in life, when I got most other things.

What you may not know about Byrne is that he's an avid supporter of the arts, and has dabbled in a range of media since the band's formation. Much of his artistic work has a political or social commentary, but it is sensitive and witty - as are many of his lyrics.

The exhibition at Vacant included a small selection of Byrne's art, along with covetable rarities from the Talking Heads catalogue and Byrne's own collection.

Special mention goes to my favourite installation, the carpet of effects pedals.

People were hesitant to get on it, even though there was giant text on the floor saying "WALK ON ME". Here I am stomping away and generally making a hell of a racket. Thanks to Kumiko from Vacant who snapped this photo, and put up with my childish antics. But isn't that the point?

Unfortunately I was too busy at the time of the opening to meet the man himself, but the exhibition closed with a little performance by Buffalo Daughter and good cheer. Let's hope David Byrne never stops being creative and inspiring everyone.

Photographer Lynn Goldsmith once said of Byrne, "Some people find him distant, but I think that's because they are afraid to talk to him. They think he is Mr. Super Smart, and he is. He is smart enough not to judge people."

Paper Jewels

Incredible paper art by an incredibly talented lady, Anna Gleeson. Anna is a Hong Kong based artist with strong ties to Japan. She works primarily with paper, and has presented this "look book" of oversized earrings which she showed at the Tokyo Art Book Fair. Love love love.

Could I get away with wearing these out? What if it rains?

Setagaya Antique Market

Let me share with you a nice little piece of information. Setagaya Antique Market (Boro-ichi) in Tokyo is probably the best antique market in the world. Yes, I know I haven't been to every antique market in the world, but I'm convinced this one reigns supreme anyway. Anything that can keep me outdoors in 7 degree winter for more than 4 hours has got to be good in some way.

I wasn't totally sure what to expect of this event as I've never been before, but it blew me away in a stupor of fabric, ceramic, wood and metal love. The sheer volume of stuff here is immense. Running over two days in December and located between Setagaya and Kamimachi stations in Setagaya-ku, the market is packed with street after street and block after block of vendors keen to flog their wares at impossibly decent prices. Bad timing for me, since I didn't have a spare ¥50,000 to blow on antique kimono, leather cutoffs and exotic plants...but hey, I picked up a few little treasures and documented the whole process!

First stop: Silk remnants. Naturally.

All the stalls were lit with these running lines of caged lightbulbs. The effect was quite lovely.

Leather paradise! And so goddamn cheap!

This was a slightly more unusual stall. But hey, if you don't want to pay full price...

Even the guys from 7/11 brought out their own little stall, trying to bring some vendor allure to the infamous PIZA man. Come on guys, we all know it's pretty much the shittiest hangover food you can buy.

MOAR FABRIC.

Grab, ladies. Grab like you've never grabbed before.

This vat of tea leaves smelt so good I just wanted to dive into it like a chinchilla.

So after hoofing it back and forth between Kamimachi and Setagaya, occasionally dropping into Uniqlo in an attempt to thaw out my frozen toes, I can say I'm suitably pooped. I still love antiques though.

Next time, Stetagaya Market...I will come armed with buckets of cash and my grabbiest of grab hands.

Anntian

Do you know Anntian? No? Yes? Maybe? They're yet another sparkling talent to come out of Berlin, where their label was founded in 2006. I've been keeping a close eye on Germany lately...it's a tingly little hotspot of innovative fashion design. I'm well overdue for a visit.

I adore their latest A/W 10/11 Collection, Walk the Light. The designers, Anne Hilkin and Christian Kurt, have given us this little insight:

"[It's] about walks that you have in the dark/night, it's about illuminated windows that give moments of insight while passing them, about a light cone of a pocket lamp, about beaming spotlights wandering around, detecting, blinding, searching, finding and losing again then focussed out of sight".

Personally I prefer a collection to be left a little more up to interpretation, but for Anntian the concept is clearly far more integral to entire design process. To be honest this is a breath of fresh air. There you go design students - you CAN turn your obscure concepts into perfectly viable product ideas!

Annitan were also inspired enough to hit us with three different photo shoots to present their collection. I love all of them, hence the plethora of images following (all from Anntian's website).

Aren't the scarves breathtaking? Up close and personal the detail of the digital print is even finer than it looks. If you're in Tokyo you can get a better look at these and the rest of the collection at Wut Berlin (yes I plug WB a lot, but it is one of my favourite boutiques).

Oh and their website is the bomb, is it not?

Vintage Japanese Subway Posters

Two things I love - vintage Japanese printed paraphernalia and funny shit - come together in the form of these delightful old "manner posters" from what would appear to be the golden era of train etiquette, the late 70's.

The three annoying train monsters: Leg-crossing monster, sleeping monster and newspaper-reading monster.

This poster of the high-class courtesan Agemaki (from the kabuki play "Sukeroku"), whose captivating beauty was said to make men forgetful, is meant to remind passengers to take their umbrellas when they leave the train.

In the style of Toulouse-Lautrec, the title of this poster reads "coughing on the platform". Concon / Cancan / get it?

Japan Fashion Week Favourites 2010

As per usual, this is coming in a little later than anticipated. But sometimes just when you think you have a bit of time...BAM. Someone requires about 2 weeks worth of solid design work from you. No biggie. I've been meaning to get stuck into Japan Fashion Week since I checked it out a whole two weeks ago.

The five day stretch of runway shows, exhibitions and installations was frenetic, with most days following a pattern something like this: Roppongi - Ebisu - Yoyogi - Ebisu - Roppongi - Harajuku - Roppongi. The shows were strewn around Tokyo's uptown district, in some wonderful (and some awful) venues, and the times and locations certainly kept us on our toes (with lots of running in heels. Yowch). My runway reports have been up at Japanese Streets since the end of JFW, but I'm yet to do a slightly more personalised summary. Hence!

Araisara

Ok so the first look of the Araisara range appears to be a giant opal. And yes, I know this because I come from the land of duty-free opal products. However, the collection as a whole was backed up with effortless feminine shapes, a soft watercolour colour palette and delicate textures. The looks achieved were dreamy and celestial, but still strong. Full report here.

Hiroko Koshino

Hiroko Koshino's S/S collection didn't grab me quite as much as her opulent A/W range did, but there were still some key pieces that I really loved, namely those with more colour blocking and geometric/graphic prints. And she does tights very, very well. Full report here.

Matohu

A few more images for Matohu, since it was probably my favourite collection of JFW. They can do no wrong by me with their sublime colour palette (honestly, is it not the loveliest thing you've seen?), relaxed layered styles, soft shirting and those beautiful long bed jackets. Want. Discovered

A tight little collection which seemingly spanned the entire history of English subcultures. Skinhead, mod, punk, fallen Catholic school boy...no stone was left unturned when attaching influences to this range. I really like the fact that Discovered tend to do something completely different every season, and their S/S didn't fail to deliver in that respect. Full report here.

Junya Tashiro

Junya Tashiro's collection was borderline 'too girly' for me, but I was sold with those beautiful yellows and lustrous satins & charmeuses.

ato

Ato was a standout collection for me. The sophisticated, restrained, varsity-meets-classic-suiting looks were a cut above many of the other menswear ranges shown for S/S 11. The well executed tailoring, considered details and perfect fits were key to the success of this collection.

Hisui

HISUI A/W 11

Who are those little grey guys anyway...? This video is exactly what we experienced at the Hisui exhibition. Not only was a vast amount of work put into the collection from Comme des Garcons protege Ito Hiroko, but this "interactive installation" was designed to highlight all the amazing transformable qualities of each piece. I would love more designers to get creative in this way.

Whew! Done. Now back to regular Tokyo life...if such a thing exists.

Keetra Dean Dixon

Keetra Dean Dixon's work is a beautiful and thoughtful play on words. I haven't come across many artists/designers who are able to use typography in such a sensitive and expressive way. Needless to say I'm quite besotted. I especially love the "BECOME" slab of agate; it appeals to the child in me that once used to collect cheap, colourful gemstones.

Waiting For Winter

So I'm looking forward to my first real winter here in Japan. Coming from Sydney, I was told I "wouldn't enjoy" Tokyo's winter. One friend actually suggested I may "die, screaming". Well contrary to popular belief I am, in fact, able to buy warm coat so I can then enjoy my days frolicking in the crisp, cold air. Much like this trio:

Sensing Nature

One reason that I love living in this town is the art galleries. They are huge, tiny and everything in between. They are hidden down back streets in unassuming suburbs (like the fantastic SCAI The Bathhouse in historical Yanaka) or dominating the Tokyo skyline as is the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi, where I went to check out this incredible exhibition last weekend.

The concept of the masterful Sensing Nature is as follows, taken from the Mori publication:

Yoshioka Tokujin, Shinoda Taro and Kuribayashi Takashi are three internationally active artists/designers who give abstract or symbolic expression to immaterial or amorphous concepts as well as natural phenomenon such as snow, water, wind, light, stars, mountains, waterfalls and forests. Their ideas of nature suggest that it is not something that is to be contrasted with the human world, but that it is something that incorporates all life-forms, including human-beings.

Sounds fascinating? It is. The three artists interpreted this theme in a slightly different way, but all created works that played with scale, movement and texture, making them extremely sensitive and captivating. And I really do love how you're allowed to take photos in the Mori - other galleries take note!

Yoshioka Tokujin's Snow. Tokujin produced a similar installation for an Issey Miyake catwalk show years ago, and has recreated the effect on a huge scale - this piece is room-size, and the rooms at the Mori sure ain't small!

Kuribayashi Takashi's Wald aus Wald. A beautiful white papier-mache (I'm sure it has a more technical term) forest which you peek into from holes in the "ground". Viewing the installation from above and below were two totally different experiences...I think this is what makes it so successful.

Katharina Trudzinski & Hui-Hui

This is what happens when great artists and textile designers get together and start a fashion label. You end up with something tactile, colourful and inspired.

Hui-Hui was founded by German artist and designer Katharina Trudzinski, whose fashion designs evolved naturally from her beautiful sculpture and installation art. Sight Unseen found out more details about Katharina's work:

Made from constellations of scraps, street finds, and everyday junk cloaked in perfectly calibrated hues, her work — some of which becomes inspiration for the pieces in her clothing line — is meant to dialogue with its surroundings. “It’s not my intent that the materials should be cheap, I just like to use things that are around me,” she says. “I like to start with what I’ve got.”

I really admire an artist who chooses to work with recycled materials, especially when they can create something as unique and contemporary as Trudzinski's work. Take note, design industry.

Like every curious blogger has before me, I've started a tumblr. It's called Japatterns. Japan / patterns / you get me?

As a textile print designer my eyes are more or less fixated on anything patterned within sight. Which, in a city like Tokyo, means I'm on overload pretty much all the time. No, I swear I'm looking at you...no I'm not looking at the amazing wallpaper behind your head...

Hence this tumblr was born! I'm hoping it will become a really useful online resource for those as clearly besotted with Japanese patterns as I am.

And one more thing...

Courtesy of the pattern mecca that is Patternity, my stunning limited edition (I was 990/1000 - just made it!) screen-printed tights arrived today. I can't believe I'm trying them on considering how hot it is outside, but I'm hoping to encourage a bit of Autumn weather here.

Would You Like That In a Bag?

Japan has a great tradition of wrapping things up. And why not? If you're going to give someone a present, be it large or small, why not diss the typical piece of wrapping paper for something a little more surprising and unique?

In the basement level of Shibuya's Parco, the ever-so-stylish stationery shop Delfonics is exhibiting the Paper Bag Market #2 (clearly #1 happened before I moved to the country, so I'm glad they considered me this time). I visited last weekend and was squee-ing in delight at all the cute baggy goods for sale. And check out the gorgeous exhibition space - decked out like a cool 70's Eames-adorned office. E for effort Tokyo, once again.

Naturally the prices were exorbitant, even if some of the bags were "vintage"...ahem, they're still just paper. But! Here is my little selection. I've used quite a few already for little gifts sent back home. Too fun.

Comme des Garçons and A World Of Scent

After a hectic week of apartment hunting (which landed me in lovely Shimokitazawa), I've finally had a chance to poke around the shops of Tokyo. Just dipping my feet into much-loved Harajuku today, but enough to send my Tokyo senses reeling in a state of excitement when I discovered this.

I've let on about my penchant for fine perfumes before, but it was confounded when I came across Comme des Garçons' newest, Wonderwood. This rich, masculine fragrance is so completely unlike any women's perfumes I've come across recently. It's spicy and luxurious, heavy on sandalwood and the most interesting thing about it is the complete lack of floral content (though it's gotta be in there somewhere). Basically, it smells like wood.

Typical of Comme, attention to detail is key in any of their new product lines. The superb branding of this fragrance includes a film by the Brothers Quay, entitled Wonderwood, with the opening statement "Someone who loved wood more than words could say". Need I say more? I think I fall into that category!

It's a beautiful little piece that reflects the identity of the perfume perfectly. There's even a segment with animated parquetry! You can download it from the Wonderwood website.

Hello. I Live In Japan Now.

I'm back!

The last couple of weeks have been a bit of a blur. Stuffing my life into a suitcase, flying to Tokyo, starting my life again in Japan. Luckily the impact has been buffered a bit by the wonderful hospitality of my Tokyo-ite cousins Leon and Riya, who have spared so much of their time introducing me to their favourite little pieces of Japan life.

Above we have photos of the O-matsuri (festival) in local Azabu-juban, and a weekend spent at the beach in Shimoda, a few hours south of Tokyo. The festival mostly involved loads of delicious snacks including fish on sticks, frosty cucumbers on sticks, "tornado potato" (must be tried to be believed), and all kinds of grilled seafood. It's more of a novelty for the kids, who will be tempted nearly every two metres by something they can fish for, throw for, pull for or whack for in the hope of winning some brightly coloured, mostly useless toy prize.

The highlight of my Tokyo Introduction Week however was the last two days spent lolling on the beach in Shimoda, snorkelling, swimming, lounging, feasting and running from giant Inoshishi (wild boar).

Yep, it's all happening. And I just cannot wait to get my teeth stuck into Tokyo's design scene. Yokoso!

From One Place To The Next

Hello!

I'm alive...barely.

Why is it that when you get to the end of some long-term goal - in my case, ceasing full-time work - you always get hit with a death cold? It's the evil order of the universe I believe. So after a week of lying on the couch wrapped in a blanket and watching mostly terrible films and a whole lot of HBO series, my excitement level for the move to Tokyo is back up to ridiculous. This is my (extremely short) transitional period, so I really wanted to do a "transitional" blog post. Something that says: I've lived here, now I'm about to live somewhere else, and this is how I feel about it.

I've recently put my hands on two wonderful photographic publications, both of which illustrate a side of living in Japan and Australia that is not always the most obvious. I think these images more or less encapsulate how I really connect to my (now) two homes.

A Message From Sales and Marketing

It's that time of the year when I decide to move to Tokyo, give myself too little time to sort my life out and then have to do a crazy everything-must-go market stall to help fund the plane ticket. Come along!

This Saturday the 7th, myself and my lovely friends Kirsty and Rachel will be selling nearly all the clothing we own at the monthly Surry Hills markets. A grande pile of vintage and designer pieces, all the fabrics I've ever bought and never sewed with, awesome vintage dressmaking patterns, accessories, jewellery, shoes and anything else you can think of. Except menswear - sorry fellas, bring your girlfriends instead.

And just like when you buy a TV from Bing Lee, if you ask for a lower price we'll probably go lower. I'll even be selling the damn stall decorations! It's always a lovely cruisey day at the SH markets, the quality of clothing for sale is excellent and you can get yourself a delicious Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) lunch.

And for those of you who haven't yet scooped up a copy of My Tokyo, I'll be selling a whole lot of 'em! Hot damn!
