Good Design Comes in Small Packages

A beautiful collection of vintage Japanese matchbox designs, circa 1920 - 1940. Courtesy of Jane McDevitt, who has turned one of these designs into the cutest little iPhone background.

Loads more creative than your standard Redheads box, aren't they?

Berliners Do It Better

Penelope's Sphere, AW 10/11. I need to see more of this label.

Berlin-based designer Tamari Nikoleishvili has concocted an absolutely winning combination of unique panelling, fabrication and drape. Not to mention back views to be proud of; I do love it when the back makes me a little bit more excited than the front. And tell me this model isn't Lady Gaga? Uncanny.

AW 09/10

That airmail scarf. I'm completely in love. And I'm really quite impressed at how adventurous and varied the designs are within the one collection. Looking forward to what comes next.

I discovered Penelope's Sphere at the very ace Wut Berlin in Tokyo, one of my favourite boutiques of all time, ever (I've harped on about it in My Tokyo), and the go-to place for innovative up-and-coming German labels (if in Japan). Garsh, only a few weeks until I move. See you soon Tokyo/Berlin.

For the Birds

I have always dreamt of being surrounded by birds, thousands of different species all filled in a house somewhat like a giant aviary with great hanging plants and glass ceilings and I'd be the crazy bird lady living inside with my feathered obsessions. This is why I fell instantly in love with the work of two creatives dabbling in "birdy portraiture".

Illesteva: Latin Las Vegas

The eyewear of fresh New York label Illesteva is really something else. Inspired by 1950's Havana, the era's entertainment capital, these awesome shades are handmade in Germany and Italy with the highest quality materials and style in mind. A blurb about their current collection:

Illesteva's collection pays homage to the characters that rules Havana at its prime. The look book was shot by David Cabrera on famed Calle Ocho Boulevard in Miami's historic "Little Havana" district, guest starring some of the worlds best domino players.

And I've got to say, I think this is my favourite fashion shoot of all time. Not to mention how covetable the styles are.

You can get them online at Oki-ni.

Joon & Jung

Cloud Stool

Some day (really soon) I hope to have more time to work on projects that are as inspired and exciting as Joon & Jung's. They are dreamlike and playful; creations of delightful whimsy that for me evoke many fond childhood memories. I adore their running theme of clouds.

The South Korean born, Netherlands living designers work across a huge range of mediums and disciplines including ceramics, textiles, furniture, industrial design, interior design, and design research and journalism. Why do one when you can do them all?

Cloud Umbrella

Sweet Tear. Wouldn't you love to see these in every cafe?

Cloudmon. It's like a Pokemon, except better. Check out the cute little guy on the right!

Pillow Blanket is just asking to be slept on.

Origami Solarcell Lamp

Paper Alarm Clock, why not?

Architect Curtain

Can't wait to see more work from this fabulous creative studio.
